They have the memorial built on a grassy hill that used to be a sanddune used to launch their gliders from. The little runway was made for visitors flying in and is a very popular strip. It's just the runway with a parking place and a phone boot. On sunny summer days it's hard to get a parking place there. |
This was also a challenging approach. The runway is surrounded by trees on every side and a power cable crossing just before the threshold. We had a strong crosswind coming in from over the Atlantic which made it tricky because it is blocked by the trees when you descent between them. Same thing when departing. |
I saw some beautifull machines during my stay. Like this sleek black learjet... |
..and this very funny looking military Beech King Air 200, with black antenna like things all over. Probably made for electronic jamming or so... |
This flying fortress visited Greenville for a few days, collecting money for charity. |
As did this German Junkers.. |
And how about this Boeing Stearman in front of the tower at Spartanburg Memorial Airport. |
